One Week Until Our Show (*dead on floor*) and A Sneak Peek at a Fit I Threw
by Jen Hatmaker on July 31st, 2014

Our show airs one week from today.
Please excuse me while I breathe into a paper bag.
Before it comes out and things get weird, I wanted to make sure I told you a few things. Mainly, we had a blast filming this thing. We really sincerely did. For some reason I need you to know this because TV often (deservedly) gets a bad rap and I want you to know another side. Like I told our crew during the wrap party: “This whole experience was 83% awesome!” The other 17% was reserved for such delightful moments like the video clip below when I lost my mind over green paint like a psycho:
My favorite part is when our designer cheerfully says, "These are some pretty bold colors in here!" and I answered, "They are." Like a dead robot.

I want you to know a couple of things before you watch us on your actual TV set. When HGTV came knocking last summer, our little family was really wobbly. As I’ve told you, my travel schedule had taken a real toll on our marriage and kids. We were super, super shaky. I, personally, was on the verge of disintegrating. So much time apart. So much emotional, public work for a mediocre speaker and introvert by nature. So much phoning it in at home.
At the close of our show, Brandon and I sat down to evaluate the experience, and he looked me dead in the eyes and said:
“This show saved us.”
It really did. Because we worked side-by-side together all day, every day. We had a blast. We laughed and giggled and enjoyed each other to shreds. While renovating a house we lived in was disastrous horrible freezing challenging, we were home. We were Team Hatmaker again. We were saved.
And our crew? Precious to us! We spent more time with these people than anyone else on earth for five months. They are now grafted in to our extended family and friend group, too. We took every moment seriously and acted professionally at all times. At no point did all the guys have pull-up contests on Remy’s gymnastics bar or stage jump rope competitions with the kids. We had dozens and dozens of lunches on our patio together, which comprise my favorite memories of the whole show. We discussed it ALL: travel, dreams, religion, ex-girlfriends and boyfriends, impending weddings (one of which Brandon is officiating!), books, family, God, movies that certain men tried not to cry during but finally broke down and sobbed in front of their bro’s (I’m looking at you, Christopher).

It was just fun. I remembered how good Brandon and I are together. I remembered how hilarious our kids are. I remembered the value of home; a place I’d been so absent from. I remembered how much I love my little community and what it means to be a good neighbor again. I planted my feet back in my life, and it was so very healing. Every benefit was already realized the day the show wrapped.
Then I kind of forgot you guys were still going to see all of it. I guess that is how TV works? Yeah. This next part, the TV part, is just a whole ‘nother thing. HEH HEH HEH HEH!! (That is my nervous fake laugh.) People are posting screen shots of their DVR Recorded Shows with “Our Big Family Renovation” scheduled. Omg. That is our big family. HEH HEH HEH HEH!
Well, at any rate, the whole show is in the bag and is definitely coming to a TV near you a week from today: Thursdays starting August 7th, 10:00 and 10:30pm CT on HGTV: My Big Family Renovation. All the voiceovers are done by yours truly, and the first one is the worst because I am an author, not a professional voiceover person and I didn’t know what I was doing. (In the studio with the HGTV people in my ear as I’m reading the scripts: “Punchier. Less punch. More like a friend. More like a host. Conversational. Less conversational. Sarcastic. Too much sarcasm. Brighter. Quieter. Louder. Happier.” Just, I don’t know, you guys.)
Three fun things:

  1. I wore my favorite cause t-shirts, accessories, and jewelry in every show. Be watching my blog each Thursday for giveaways from featured orgs! Great stuff from Noonday Collection, The A21 Campaign, Krochet Kids, Help One Now, and more…
  2. HGTV will be posting your live tweets on the show the night of the premier! Brandon and I will be tweeting that night too. So follow along live on Twitter, post something awesome, and get famous. Use the hashtag: #MyBigFamilyReno - You can follow me on twitter here and Brandon here.
  3. Our Producer Extraordinaire Adam, who thinks himself a funny pants, tucked the goofiest gray ceramic fox and squirrel he insisted on buying into every single room reveal somewhere. He and I went tearing through the house looking for them on more than one occasion, lest a revealed room be left out of the game. Watch for them on the show! Even I had a hard time spotting them, and I was an accomplice.
We are throwing a huge party next Thursday, because not only is it the premier but I am turning 40 that day. I will officially be in possession of All The Feelings on August 7th, and the only helpful factor is that my adult braces are off. Thank you for being excited with us and for holding all constructive criticism until August 8th or later when I am in control of my wits again. Just say nice pretty things and I’ll pretend you mean it.

Who is watching next Thursday??? Anyone piggybacking with an awesome Noonday Nationwide Trunk Show?

Otherwise its hotel HGTV for this girl!!! So excited, for this and also for Chuys, Salt Lick, Juan in Million, Breakfast Tacos.... OMG.... BREAKFAST TACOS!!! How GREAT is your husband while talking you off the meltdown ledge during that green paint freak out moment?! I mean, he totally handled it like a boss & even got a kiss at the end. :) Husbands are just so perfect at handling our 'moments' aren't they? So good to us.
Terri - July 31st, 2014 at 12:07 PM
LOL! The show looks awesome....and I agree, the green didn't work for me either! :)

Sara White - July 31st, 2014 at 12:10 PM

Ps:I am doing a noonday show on Your Day, thanks to Your Encouragement.
Pps: our family was also on hgtv (one episode - my yard goes disney) and I agree...such a FUN experience. I loved getting to see all the behind the scenes TV stuff, chat with the crew, etc... It will forever be one of my most favorite memories.
Ppss: i love you! Do you wanna do a house swap vaca where I could just meet you for like 5 minutes? Cause I'm for real if you do...we live by the beach and disney...just sayin. And we're normal. You can watch us on tv after all.... ;)
Congratulations on the show :)
Corie Clark - July 31st, 2014 at 12:44 PM
I might have to get cable JUST to watch your show. I'm sure my husband will be just fine with that. And I don't think your fit was bad at all. I was expecting much worse. Not that I think you're worse. But my fits are much worse! You are a far better human than me!
Jennifer - July 31st, 2014 at 12:47 PM
You are (as usual) cracking me up! THAT was your "big fit" about her wall color?!? Oh girl, that was calm. Love it and we.can.not.wait for the show to air!!
Courtney - July 31st, 2014 at 12:50 PM
Curious: was Remy happy with how it turned out? That's all that matters, right?
MB - July 31st, 2014 at 12:53 PM
I fell for you when I read your blog about being the worst end of the school year mom and tears of laughter streamed down my face (even after the third time I read it). I thought, "this girl is really super cool" when I read you had a show on the only station I watch on television, HGTV. Then to see we SHARE THE SAME BIRTHDAY!!! (okay, my 40th my have happened 2 years ago). You are unknowingly my new best friend. I love your posts and your amazing way of sharing love, compassion and humor all wrapped up in one.
Tricia - July 31st, 2014 at 12:57 PM
I had to laugh when I saw the paint color! We bought a house with a room exactly that color. When you walked down the hall toward the room a fluorescent green shimmer would start to burn your eyes. We repainted the room taupe (with animals for the kids we would later adopt), but sometimes I still catch a glimmer of green underneath it all. I feel your pain! :)
Tracy Earley - July 31st, 2014 at 1:01 PM
Can't wait...I think I should have a pre "one week until" party!!
Phil - July 31st, 2014 at 1:16 PM
My wife and I are so excited to watch! Hey, it's even on my work calendar--true appointment TV. (Ok, maybe just so we remember to set the DVR.) I keep telling my wife she should apply for Survivor (since she's seen every episode ever), but she does not want the audience. We are all so hesitant to reveal the true us (points finger at myself). Thanks for being real, being afraid, and being willing.

Tricia, remember the green IS still there in the palm tree leaves! It was truly awful though.
Ruth - July 31st, 2014 at 1:31 PM
I have my DVR set as I will be leaving for Uganda for a mission trip the day your show premiers!! So looking forward to it(Both the trip and your show!). I am sure I am going to love it!!
NikJames - July 31st, 2014 at 1:41 PM
Dear Sweet Jen,
As a mother, wife, architect, substitute interior designer, and homeowner;
paint often makes me cry.
It's all good though.
Cause Jesus said in his father's house there are many rooms.
And I'm pretty sure He will not charge us with the responsibility of picking the colors for any of them.
And the let the church say .......Amen!

Diana Trautwein - July 31st, 2014 at 1:53 PM
Haven't been to this busy, fun place in ages and ages, but I am SO watching this show. Love you honesty, my friend. And just to make you feel a teensy bit better about the green room - with our first house, I got the bright idea to paint it green. Went to the cheapo hardware store and brought back what I thought was nice soft, color. Rolled it on the front and side and stood across the street to admire my handiwork and about DIED because, girl . . . it was CHARTREUSE. The entire house was chartreuse. Quick trip to the hardware store to add tons of white and I fixed it. Sort of. Never did like it. But we had NO $$ is those days, and it stayed as it was until we moved on. Sigh. Yeah, paint.
Jessica - July 31st, 2014 at 1:56 PM
I am!! And I'm hosting a Noonday trunk show/watching party that night!! In Frisco Tx. Can't wait. We will sing happy birthday while we buy pretty things and watch your fun show! You rock Jen%u2764%uFE0F

Attending a Noonday Trunk show then home to watch LIVE! eeeeek!
Danielle - July 31st, 2014 at 2:43 PM
Yes, to piggybacking, may even be a margarita in homage to your hilarious friend who brought them the day you were filming (not this, for the seven series I believe?) It's a stretch I know, but you gotta tie in the margaritas, we'll send a toast and some birthday love your way too. Can't wait.
Tray - July 31st, 2014 at 2:46 PM
Rumor has it....if you want to turn My Big Family Renovation in a DRINKING GAME (ala "Hi Bob" from the 80's) you have two choices. 1) whenever you see the beloved LadyBird on screen or 2) whenever Jen, Brandon or one of the kids says "awesome" (also brought back from the 80's) you take a drink of your favorite bee.....soda. #ladybird #awesome #hibob
Becky - July 31st, 2014 at 2:59 PM
So fun! Can't wait!!

PS - my birthday is August 7 too. And it's a big milestone one for me as well - the big 30! ;)
Abbie - July 31st, 2014 at 3:12 PM
How was that a fit?!?!?! Can't wait for your show!!
Haley - July 31st, 2014 at 3:16 PM
I SOOO wish I had cable so I could watch this. I may have to make a special trip to my parents for this.
Also, the 'fit' you threw was not bad at all. Seems like something everyone would do.
Liz - July 31st, 2014 at 3:40 PM
I knew we would be great friends if we ever met. We did a 'seven' bible study in our women's group last year and the joke was always that you would be my bestie if we lived near each other. Now it's confirmed - our 40th birthdays are a day apart!! And funny enough - we are going to San Fran and napa to celebrate!
Can't wait to watch your show!
Amy - July 31st, 2014 at 3:42 PM
Considering cable for the next few months because I might just love you. Honestly hilarious and paint does this to people for sure. Ask me about my bathroom sometime. Can't wait to see more!
Sue - July 31st, 2014 at 3:52 PM
Can't wait!
Donna Lohr - July 31st, 2014 at 4:16 PM
We don't own a TV so we are driving 40 minutes to a friend's house to watch from 1100-midnight since we are EST! Yep. We love you guys.
Natalie Truman - July 31st, 2014 at 4:22 PM
So excited for the show. Invite is out PJs wine and snacks and yes Noonday are all apart of the evening. Love how can God can use something like a TV show to save us when we didn't know we needed saving. Way to go Hatmakers and thanks for letting us be a fly on your wall.
Susan Hurd - July 31st, 2014 at 5:06 PM
Excited to watch the show. Love the way you describe your experiences. You are very entertaining! :-)

Stephanie - July 31st, 2014 at 5:42 PM
WHAT SHOWS MADE THEM CRY! This needs to be told. It is very important.
Sarah - July 31st, 2014 at 6:56 PM
Oh, Jen. I can not wait for next Thursday!!! Have I already mentioned that the only reason we haven't canceled our cable yet is because of my needing HGTV to watch YOUR show?!?!?! Seriously can't wait! So excited that this opportunity was given to your family!
Sonia - July 31st, 2014 at 7:34 PM
Jen, that was no hissy fit!!! I've had worse "disagreements" than that and my hissy fits might tip the Richter Scale. You were calm, Sister! So excited for the show - h ave it set on my DVR since we will be out of the country on the 7th. What a beautiful example for all of America to witness!

Heather Jenkins - July 31st, 2014 at 8:04 PM
Only been waiting since forever! It cannot be less than awesome because it will be HONEST.
Lindsay - July 31st, 2014 at 8:58 PM

Missy - August 1st, 2014 at 9:53 AM
Girlfriend, if that's you being "psycho" about paint . . . you are going to be just fine! Can't wait for the show. I read your blog all the time. It keeps me sane in my own crazy hectic life. PLUS the hysterical laughter I often burst out with while reading your blog has led to some great conversations with my co-workers :)
Kate - August 1st, 2014 at 12:49 PM
um, i can't wait. #thatisall
Summer - August 1st, 2014 at 1:11 PM
We had some rain damage in our house this spring and had to tear apart our two biggest bedrooms and are living in the midst of this project. If I never have to scrub drywall dust and mud out of my hardwood floors again on a daily basis, it'll be too soon! Glad you made it through the chaos. I'm hoping I will (at least my kiddos are probably too young to be too scarred by this). :-)
Liss - August 1st, 2014 at 3:11 PM
You my friend are my hero. Cannot wait for the show. Thank you for being transparent and for sharing your family with us! Couldn't possibly love you more!
Charlotte McMullen - August 2nd, 2014 at 10:15 AM
It's all good. :) Really. The whole bunch of ya are cute as a blue mason jar of buttons.

C Barlow - August 3rd, 2014 at 7:08 PM
I love the way that you stand in the hallway and sort of semi-stalk the Can't wait for the show! Thanks for keeping it real as always!!!
Melibeli - August 4th, 2014 at 8:55 AM
Um, yeah, that "hissy fit" is nothing compared to ones that I've thrown over stupid stuff. And paint TOTALLY does that to people.
Name - August 4th, 2014 at 11:51 AM
I am SO EXCITED about this show! I can't wait! (And Happy Birthday--the 40s have been good for me.)

Sarah Pinault - August 4th, 2014 at 11:56 AM
Having a Trunk Show in Maine, thanks to the delightful Laura Smith who is up North from Knoxville, TN! We don't have any kind of cable though so have to miss the show, boo!
Valerie - August 4th, 2014 at 6:12 PM
It is my birthday also on the 7th! Thank you for my present!
Chris - August 5th, 2014 at 9:16 AM
I like when you said, "And I just got over myself." Paint makes me crazy too. :)
Melisa - August 5th, 2014 at 9:55 AM
Fellow Leo, today is my 34th birthday, so we're pretty much twins : ) I will be watching, can't wait. Had the pleasure of hearing you speak at Immanuel Baptist Church in Marshall TX earlier this year and you were sweet enough to snap a pic with me & express warm thoughts about a mutual friend we share. Small world. Congrats on the show, I can't wait to see it.
Pattie - August 5th, 2014 at 10:01 AM
Wonderful post! I will be watching online either late Thurs. or sometime Friday, depending on when HGTV posts it! :)
Fiona - August 5th, 2014 at 1:10 PM
So looking forward to seeing the show! And BTW- yes, paint can do "that" to you!
Robin - August 5th, 2014 at 2:49 PM
...when you said..."and...I just got over myself" it...
Melanie - August 5th, 2014 at 5:20 PM
I will be watching and yes at a Noonday show!!! Love you Jen Hatmaker!!!
casey - August 5th, 2014 at 11:38 PM
I'm sorry but did you just call yourself a mediocre speaker? Because what the heck? Your words, because of the exact way you say them, in the exact tone needed with the silly and the serious and the absolute fall of the floor love for Jesus, are words that have changed my life and the lives of so many. There is nothing mediocre about anything you do. I cannot wait to watch the show and no doubt laugh until I cry. Thank you for bringing Jesus to the TV - you can't help but shine him all over the screen.
Stacie - August 7th, 2014 at 5:59 AM
Let me just say that I woke up this morning...August 7th and almost had a heart attack because I thought I'd missed the premier because I was thinking it was last night!!! That's what happens when you temporarily leave your life to jaunt to another country for a few days and play with Haitian kids! So freakin excited it's tonight. I will tell the world! ;)
Rebecca - August 7th, 2014 at 11:20 AM
I have been a fan since your 'worst end of year mom' post. We also have an old farmhouse (circa 1906) that we remodeled WHILE LIVING IN IT, so I can relate totally relate. Can't wait to watch your show tonight Jen!
Patricia Hoover - August 8th, 2014 at 2:32 PM
LOLOLOL... watched from the lovely Fuqua home in Wichita with the lovelies Rita, Jill, and down the street cohort in crime ~ Jenna. We were terribly entertained...and proud!
Lisa - September 5th, 2014 at 8:21 AM
Loved the show and the home is just my style! I saved the episodes so I can use your ideas for my new home. However, why was your oldest son's room so awfully drab and simple compared to the amazing personalized rooms of your other children. It didn't seem at all fair - like he was the black sheep of the family and got left out.
Cherry - September 13th, 2014 at 3:44 PM
Yes I totally agree....I would really love to see how his room turned out. I kept recounting the rooms I saw to make sure I wasn't mistaken and that maybe I had missed his. But I can't even find a photo of it online ........I know there is a limit to the amount of time they can show and they try to fit it all into so many episodes and I know it's tough but his too isn't even mentioned one time .....I love the show though.
Ruthie C in TN - October 4th, 2014 at 1:23 PM
I just watched the shows - I couldn't stop watching! I loved them! I loved that you worked together with your husband to get the task accomplished. I REALLY loved that you showed it's normal to get frustrated with a project (think Remy's green room). I think we all have had those moments - and I'm glad it was part of the show - because it inspires us to not give up, know that it's ok to have those feelings - and then "get over ourselves". :-)

Your show inspired me to look you up and I love the work you've done as detailed in your blogs. Thanks for sharing yourself, your renovation, your family - and Our God! God bless you Jen Hatmaker!
