Calling all book nerds! Are you looking for a place where your book-loving heart can flourish? Join us at jenhatmakerbookclub.com, and become one of our sisters in nerdiness. For May 2021, Jen and the club read Sue Monk Kidd’s The Book of Longings. Sue’s writing skyrocketed into notoriety after the publication of her book, The Secret Life of Bees. This novel spent nearly two years on the New York Times bestsellers list, has been translated into 36 languages, and has sold nearly 8 million copies. In addition to that smash hit, she has been nominated for and won numerous literary awards and has once again published a book that is impacting readers worldwide. The Book of Longings takes readers centuries back and immerses them in the world of Anna and her husband, Jesus. We get an intimate look at all the ways women can love, support, and encourage each other, while ensuring the stories of their lives are heard and told. This book reminds us that the power of a person does not come from who they are with and what their social status says, but instead, the way any individual impacts the world comes directly from their heart, dreams, and bravery.

All right, book clubbers, whoa, I’m so excited today to bring you another author chat with the one and the only Sue Monk Kidd. I’ve seen you guys all absolutely thrilled to chat about this book in our Facebook group. You’ve been talking up a storm around this one for obvious reasons. I’m just as excited as you. So, let’s just dive in here, because we have so much to discuss.
Sue Monk Kidd, you probably know, she was born and raised in Sylvester, Georgia, a location that, unsurprisingly, deeply impacted her writing and point of view. Sue graduated from Texas Christian University and has since attended, I can’t even count how many writing conferences and seminars. Most of you probably know her from her first novel, published in 2002, The Secret Life of Bees. It was just an absolute smash hit. I mean, it spent over two years on the New York Times Best Seller List. It has been translated into 36 languages, and has sold over eight million copies. It’s been adapted into plays, a feature film, a Broadway show, so it did okay, is what I’m saying. Sue has been nominated for and won several awards, including the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award, and the 2005 Quill Award for general fiction. It just goes on and on. She’s just a freaking national treasure, one of the best authors of our time, you guys.
And of course, our book selection for this month, The Book of Longings, which is just, whoop, it is juicy. There is so much in here to learn from, to discuss, to noodle, to consider. Obviously, to have incredible conversation around, which we have in our group this month. And so, I asked her everything. She answers everything. She is delightful. She is amazing. We’re really, really lucky, you guys. We’re so lucky that this is the caliber of author that we get to have, and that we get to talk to. And she answers our personal questions.
I am so in love with Book Club, and I am so in love with Sue Monk Kidd. You are going to love this one, you guys. Stick your earbuds in, and go take a walk, because this is a fantastic conversation. Welcome, Sue.
