My Oprah Daily Essay: The Myth of “Suffering Well”

Books

“Jen, would you like to write an article for Oprah?”

Say less.

So honored to pen this piece for Oprah Daily about how so many of us were rewarded for suffering well at the expense of, well, practically everything.

As I wrote:

“So millions of us disconnected our souls from our muscles and bones, lungs and hearts, skin and wombs. We reviled our flesh with its dangerous passions and desires. We said no to our hunger. No to pleasure. No to power. We distrusted our instincts and became bedfellows with cognitive dissonance, since we were unreliable narrators of our own lives. We let the men tell us what to do, what to think, what to believe, how to behave. We outsourced authority as instructed.”

I ache for women to treat their bodies with reverence, because they deserve nothing less. Our instincts are trustworthy, and they should be heeded, not hated.

This ties so deeply to the heartbeat of my memoir AWAKE — the lifelong unlearning of shame and the rediscovery of our own wisdom.
